Some good reasons why the Hungry Student cookbook is the ONLY thing you’ll need this year to learn to cook

As it says in the title, this blog is about the wonderful cookbook, the Hungry Student by Charlotte Pike. It is, without a doubt the greatest cooking companion I’ve ever had. We’ve been together in two flats, in two different parts of town and it taught me everything. I will be referencing it endlessly on this blog.

My poor book has definitely seen better days:

But before that, some background on my cooking and why the Hungry Student helped me in the way it did. I arrived in Halls in the Gorbals being able to cook pasta with Bolognese, pasta with pesto and oven food (sausages, potato waffles, pizza). Oh and an omelette. One of my flatmates even asked me if ever ate anything else other then pasta. We also ate out a few times in that first week and ordered food in. And I assumed that’s how it would be; I’d spend my time trawling to the Gorbals Co-op, trying to understand the accents and debating whether to ever branch out to something like…a stir fry or even…lasagne.

I would look through the book and assume I’d never have the time or space in Halls to try and cook any of the casseroles, stews or tagines.

But then, by chance, I met who would soon be my other half (and still is) at a Freshers Celiedh. As I soon found out, he found cooking a total drag and absolutely loved the idea of being cooked for. He also lived by himself with a kitchen that I could finally experiment in. (I also wanted to impress him.)

This is the first meal I cooked him:
